Cough, Coughing

Cannabis for Cough, Coughing

Smoking cannabis can cause one to cough, and whilst other ingestion methods might not cause a person to cough directly, they can cause a dry mouth and throat, which can sometimes lead to coughing. Interestingly, there is also some evidence that cannabis can suppress cough, and it has been said to be a treatment for cough for hundreds of years.

“There is a physiological rationale as to why cannabis may have a role in the suppression of cough. The cough reflex is regulated by G-protein coupled receptors. Agonists of prostanoid receptors and agonists of bradykinin receptors stimulate cough, whereas beta-adrenoceptor agonists and cannabinoids suppress cough.” Cannabis for Treatment of Intractable Malignant Cough – A Case Report, Corry de Neef, Sonia Fullerton
